Yesterday I was enjoying a cup of tea at my favorite coffee shop when the owner introduced me to an elderly couple she’s known for many, many years. We chatted a while and discovered that we had some mutual friends – then we parted ways as I wanted to do some writing that afternoon.
A little bit later they walked past my seat on their way out the door. Seeing my Bible open to Genesis, the husband remarked:
“You’re in the wrong book of the Bible.”
What?!!
In the “wrong book”? Since when is there a “wrong book” in the Bible?
And Genesis – well, that IS the foundation of the entire Bible. Just look at the first four chapters – they are revolutionary!! They are full of God’s rule and reign; full of grace and salvation and mercy; full of the wonder and beauty of the Kingdom of God in all its fullness.
Not to mention Genesis chapter 15 – which was where my Bible was open too that day. This is the chapter that turned the world on its head. This is the chapter that all of our lives and hopes rest upon.
This is the chapter where Abraham believes God and it is counted unto him as righteousness.
This is the chapter when the Creator of Heaven and Earth passes through the sacrificed animals creating a covenant relationship with humanity. A covenant in which God fulfilled and sealed both His part and Abraham – highlighting our utter dependence on His grace and righteousness.
How could Genesis be the “wrong book”?
I am with you…
Genesis is where Paul and Jesus continually point to…
Our doctrines all begin there, Genesis truly is the right book…
Did he explain himself?
Sadly he made the comment on the way out the door so I didn’t have the chance to ask him any follow up questions. I would have loved to sit down with him and hear why he thought Genesis was the ‘wrong’ book. =(
As a believer of the 6 day creation and having read “The Genesis Record” I would say that Genesis is a key book for the entire Bible
Hi Josh! I wonder if he was a “New Testament only” Christian (if there can really be such a thing). There’s a “New Testament Bible Church” close to Edmonton, and every time I drive by, I am tempted to stop in and ask them to explain themselves. It makes no sense to me!
wow – I’ve never heard of a “New Testament only” Christian..it just goes to show you that folks will divide over anything and everything. =/
